We're taking a Christmas markets river cruise in late November. It starts in Basel so we were planning on going early to visit Zurich, Bern and Lake Lucern. While Basel isn't mentioned in Rick's books it seems like a convenient place to home base prior to our trip. The cities we want to visit are all roughly an hour away by train. Any thoughts on must-see / must-do things in those locations given the (potential) winter weather?
I've only been to Basil and Zurich, and neither are in The Alps and somewhat dull--at least to me. I wouldn't want to stay in either with the winter weather so close.
Perhaps my Trip Reports will have some helpful info. Rigi on a clear day with snow was incredible! Bern markets are also fun! The Zurich main train station has the biggest indoor market in Europe. And you are so close to the Colmar/ Strasbourg markets.
Have a great trip! Safe travels.
