I am doing some planning for a trip in 2020 and considering a 10-13 day trip to Switzerland. To start with, what are the best times of the year to visit Switzerland given all factors and is using the train for transportation within the country a better option than a rental car? Thanks.

Train is better than car unless you have several people in your party or plan to bring a lot of stuff or want to visit remote towns not served directly by train. When to go depends on what you want to do: ski, hike, visit mostly cities, etc.

Thanks for the response on type of transportation. My interests will be in moderate hiking & sightseeing - - not focused on skiing.

May-October is the best time to visit if you're not interested in winter activities. My preference is for May since the crowds are not as big as in the other months.
