Switzerland to Austria by Train - Passport Control?

Hi There,

I am from Canada and traveling to Switzerland and plan to travel by train to Austria. Since Switzerland isn't part of the EU, do I need to purchase anything (aside from train ticket) prior to entering Austria?

Thanks,

Melissa

Nope. Take your passport with you.

Both countries are part of the Schengen Area allowing free movement of people, but because Switzerland is in the EEA not the EU there can be Customs inspections of the goods that they carry.

Given the current migrant and refugee crisis, and the number of those people passing through Austria, there could be further controls depending on the day. Be sure you have your passport with you....

Melissa,

I'm also from Canada and you shouldn't have any problems going from Switzerland to Austria. Which route are you planning to use for that trip?

As Nigel mentioned, be sure that your Passport is easily accessible although I doubt that anyone will check. I recently travelled from Italy to Austria, and police officers walked through the trains on a number of occasions but no one even gave me a second look (but I was ready if they did ask for I.D.).

Great advice from our fellow travelers. I just wanted to add that Austria is beginning to make crossing their border in some areas more and more difficult due to the refugee situation. I recommend getting to stations early since there could be more security check points or changes and to have your passport ready on the train for multiple inspections. Hopefully everything goes smoothly but it is good to have a little extra preparation at this time.

Also, if you have a rail pass, some conductors might ask to see your passport along with the pass.
