We are doing the Rick Steve Switzerland tour in fall of 2026 and curious about flights and/or short extension ideas after tour. We flew thru Zurich this year and it was a great experience, nice clean and efficient airport. I’m not familiar with flying out of Bern to US, and with the tour length we are also open to extending a couple days to depart from somewhere we have not visited. Any input is appreciated, have found this site helpful in the past.
I recommend flying in and out of Zurich. You are familiar with the airport and know it’s easy to get to via train. Bern does not have an international airport.
I haven’t taken the tour, but many spend extra time in Murren or Wengen.
You can also stay longer in Bern. Bern to Zurich airport is approximately 1.25 hours.
Enjoy the tour!!
I have not reviewed the tour itinerary, but train travel is so easy in Switzerland, anywhere with an intl airport is a safe bet. Geneva region is another option.
I flew in and out of Zurich.
From Bern I traveled by train to Wengen for 3 days, then back to Zurich.
More time in the mountains is what most people recommended, and I was happy with that choice.
I do not believe Bern has a passenger airport, only general aviation. If you see a flight to Bern, it is likely a flight to Zurich with a rail connection to Bern. There are direct trains from/to Zurich airport every 30 minutes.
Basel does have an airport, but it only has European flights, so you would have to connect elsewhere in Europe from/to North America. It also needs to be accessed by bus from Basel SBB station.
