Hello Travel Forum members... we am headed to Greece beginning of August for a family vacay. We have ventured to almost all the other European countries except for Switzerland or Norway. We happen to be RS style travelers (culture, venturing on our own, museums, history, etc.) so would love to hear your opinions on one or the other as it would be the first time to either country. We could have 7-10 days in either place.
I'd say Switzerland. Probably equally as expensive as Norway. Alps are the draw, even for Norwegians.
Both gorgeous, both very expensive. It's been ages since I went to Switzerland; I did Norway last year. I feel as if with only 7-10 days, Switzerland might be a better choice. Folks are often willing to go to Switzerland and see none of the major cities (though that's not what I would do), but going all the way to Norway and skipping Oslo and Bergen would seem odd. You wouldn't have a lot of time left to see the beautiful countryside. Even if you had time for fjord country, you might have a lot of problem finding a room. The lodging situation is very tight in many of the small towns. (It probably wouldn't be an issue in Oslo.)
Thanks Sam and acraven for responding. I am now leaning towards Switzerland. I shall check it out the possibilities.
Perhaps Swiss my trip report from 2021 will sway you. Have a great adventure!
I have never been to Norway. But I absolutely love Switzerland… and one of the best things is that the trains are so fast and reliable you could see a good amount of the country in that time period. You won’t regret going to Switzerland!
Both are amazing and you can’t go wrong. Been to both. I would put Switzerland slightly ahead of Norway because those mountains are just majestic. But a trip to the fjords is also something everyone should do.
I wrote a whole reply and it wouldn't go through so I'll just sum it up in this.
Norway fjords and Swiss Alps are equal in beauty. In some ways Norway is even more majestic/otherworldly.
However, after spending months in both places during summers, we vote for Switzerland simply based on weather. Norwegian fjord summers are 10% epic beautiful sunny days, 40% just ok weather and about 50% cloudy, dreary, dramatic weather. The sunny Alpine summers are just hard to beat.
Also, while both places are expensive, Norway is significantly more expensive in lodging, transportation, food, basically everything. Except maybe fish. And Switzerland has significantly better public transportation to access more of the mountains. Norway is more off the beaten path and not as easily accessible.
Thanks to all for your thoughtful contributions. I am now focused on Switzerland as I just bought a pair of airplane tics this AM. and I also just purchased the RS newly released Switzerland book. DANKE/MERCI !!
Very good choice. However, after several trips to Switzerland I finally went to Norway. It is not to be missed. Make Norway your next trip and plan to see Oslo and Bergen you will be impressed.
Fyi- the Swiss Travel Pass sale runs thru May 15, I believe. Glad you made the right decision! 😉
