Switzerland - May 2025

Heading to Switzerland in middle May next year. Can you guys let me know (pictures too during this time) of what Switzerland will be like temperature wise? Also anything we are missing from the below activities/itinerary? Any recommendations? We will be staying in the below cities and traveling to regions nearby for day trips. We are in our mid 30s adventurous couple, but hiking is not our thing.

Lucerne - 2 nights
- Mt Pilatus

Lauterbrunnen - 4 nights
- Schilthorn
- Gimmelwald
- Trummelbach Falls
- Jungfraujoch
- Wengen/Grindelwald

Zermatt - 2 nights
- Matterhorn Glacial Paradise

Montreaux - 3 nights
- Bern
- Gruyère
- Wine tasting Lausanne

Thanks so much!

Hard to answer not knowing how many NIGhTS you have.
Temperature is easy to research , you can access several sites for averages, but weather has been increasingly inconsistent in the last few years.
I would advise joining a Switzerland Facebook group for real-time, on the ground info. You can also join city-specific Facebook groups.
Have a great trip!

Pat took the words right off my fingers. Plan for everything from late-Spring to winter conditions. You may be in shirtsleeves one day and a puffer jacket and fleece another. Light layers are the key.

Do plan to spend some time in Mürren when you go to the Schilthornbahn and you can easily fit Gimmelwald in that day too. With nice weather, I would encourage you to take the walk from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg or vice versa, through the valley, maybe combine that with Trummelbach Falls. Another nice walk, not really a hike, is from Grütschalp (above Lauterbrunnen) to Mürren for magnificent views.

You run rather a risk of not seeing the Matterhorn with only 2 nights in Zermatt. Ditto with Pilatus since you only have 2 nights in Luzern. Maybe pick one or the other?

Don't forget to relax! Four locations in 11 nights is a lot for me. The weather on top any of the mountains on any given day is hard to predict. It can be gloomy at the bottom and sunny on top, or vice versa. Flexibility is good and you can monitor this from below. We enjoyed a lake cruise in Luzern, but if thats not running in May, you can still take the ferry around the lake. m not sure

I agree, skip Zermatt and add the time to charming Lucerne. Safe travels!

Weather is impossible to guess. Plan for everything and you’ll be prepared. We were in Wengen for 5 nights in late June. Had everything from rain & fog to sunny & warm. We bundled up for Jungfraujoch (40’s), then took the Eiger Express down to Grindelwald and left our cold weather clothes in a tote bag at the train station. Had lunch and it was quite warm (80’s). Went up to First and got caught by a thunderstorm and stuck on the mountain when the gondola was closed due to lightening. We were just glad we weren’t ON a gondola at the time. It’s pretty hot in there.

We'll be in Luzern the last week of May due a couple of days. Is it best to decide the same day to go to Pilatus, or is it a crapshoot anyway?

I like Mt Rigi a tiny bit better than Pilatus ; maybe because of the pleasant boat ride to the cogwheel train to the summit of RIGI.
There are webcams for the summits, so you can decide if it's clear. Usually the mornings are better, as the clouds can come in later in the day. However, it's a last minute decision, because of the weather,
We went up to Mt Rigi on a cloudy day in December one year. As the cogwheel train climbed, we were engulfed in the clouds, and couldn't see a thing. Suddenly, (and the entire train gasped) we were above the clouds with bright blue skies and fresh powdery snow. It was magical!
If you have the STP, all travel to Rigi iscovered ; Pilatus is only discounted.
There is also Mt Stanserhorn, with the open air Cabrio cable car. This is a short trip, and is wonderful for a sunset. This is also completely covered by the STP.
Have a great trip!
