Switzerland Late October

After leaving Garmisch, (having been to Rothenburg, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Munich) we planned to take the train to Zurich via Innsbruck for lunch and a little walking around. We thought we would stay in Zurich for the night then early the next morning move on to the Bernese Oberland region. We went to Lucerne last year, and while not opposed to another night there, we were quite excited about Wengen. Travel forums say Wengen seems to shutter itself up in late October, as do the other valley/mountain towns. Been to Grindelwald before, so not sure that's what we want to do, or Interlaken either. We had planned two nights in this region. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Perhaps we should just skip this area this trip and find somewhere else. Perhaps stay in Thun and commute? We want to see the scenery but also enjoy dining, wine, etc. and realize we most likely won't get the dining portion this time of year in the Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Murren area. The trip to the top of Europe seems mightly expensive - is it worth the $$? Or is there something else in the area that is impressive and a must do?

By trip to the top of Europe do you mean the Jungfrau? Yes, it is worth it.

yes that is it. But thinking wouldnt buy ticket until day of weather permitting. Still trying decide whether or not to skip this area altogether since everything is closed.
