Switzerland--January Luzern and Appenzell

We are spending eight days in Switzerland. The majority of it will be in the Berner Oberland area. We are relying completely on public transportation. We will be entering Switzerland from Austria with our first stop Appenzell. I do understand this is both a region and a town. I do want to go to the the Appenzell town museum and would love to hear some yodeling. Can anyone speak to a visit to this area in January? Will much be open? Would a bit more than a day be enough? It sounds like a lovely, traditional area, but perhaps more fun in the summer? Is Appenzell town the best place in that area to stay?

After Appenzell we will make a stop in Luzern before heading to the Berner Oberland area. Any recommendations on how much time I should budget for Luzern?

It always seems like there is more to see than the number of days available! I would also appreciate any recommendations for these two cities for places to visit, restaurants and lodging.

Thank you

jules,

I'm not sure that Appenzell will be the most ideal area to visit in January, and you may find it very "quiet". It's a very small town and if the weather is miserable there won't be a lot to do. I'm not sure if you'll be able to find a yodelling performance, but this list may help....

Yes, Appenzell town is the best place to stay as there are some nice hotels and restaurants there. I was back in Lucerne in September and would allow at least three full days there (depending on what you want to do of course). The Museum of Transport is excellent and I could easily spend a full day there.
