Switzerland itinerary check – looking for local insights (late June / early July)

Hello everyone,

We’re visiting Switzerland for our 25th anniversary and would really appreciate local input on pacing, crowd management, and any obvious improvements. We prefer scenic train travel, walking, and a moderate (not rushed) pace.
Travel dates: 21 June – 2 July
Travel style: Trains & boats, early starts, relaxed evenings, mostly self-catering
Confirmed stays & dates
Lucerne: 21–24 June (Old Town)
Zermatt: 24–27 June
Wengen: 27 June – 1 July
Zurich: 1–2 July (Old Town)

High-level plan
Lucerne (21–24 Jun): Old Town walks, Lake Lucerne, Mt. Rigi and Mt. Pilatus (boat + cogwheel round trips).
Transfer (24 Jun): Lucerne → Zermatt via Kandersteg (scenic Lötschberg route).
Zermatt (24–27 Jun): Gornergrat (incl. Riffelsee), Sunnegga; Klein Matterhorn only if weather is excellent.
Transfer (27 Jun): Zermatt → Wengen by train.
Wengen / Jungfrau region (27 Jun – 1 Jul): Lauterbrunnen valley & waterfalls, Männlichen Royal Walk, Mürren–Gimmelwald day.
Transfer (1 Jul): Wengen → Interlaken → Brienz (boat) → Lucerne → Zurich.
Zurich (1 Jul): Old Town evening walk (Lindenhof, Niederdorf, lake), early departure next morning.

Looking for local advice on
Crowd management in late June (best timing or early starts worth knowing).
Whether Klein Matterhorn adds real value given Gornergrat + Jungfrau region.
Any simple local food spots (not fine dining) in Lucerne, Zermatt, or Wengen.
Any sections that look over-ambitious or, conversely, could be improved with small tweaks.
Anything that locals feel is overrated or skippable in this plan.

Thanks in advance — happy to adjust based on local insight

My 2c.

  • Early start is always best. Summer sometimes means thunderstorms in late afternoon.
  • Take advantage of the fact that you can buy any cable car or train ticket at any of the ticket offices, and that you can buy through tickets. The Wengen station ticket office for example is often less busy than the Männlichen Cable car office. If you plan on going to Mürren then you can buy the whole Wengen - Lauterbrunnen - Mürren - Stechelberg and back ticket already in Wengen. That allows you to just skip the often long queue at the ticket office in Lauterbrunnen...

Transfer (24 Jun): Lucerne → Zermatt via Kandersteg (scenic Lötschberg route).

This route will take you much longer. 3h 17 min with 2 changes (through Bern, then after Spiez using the tunnel) vs. 4h 45min and 4 changes via Kandersteg. Both routes will have the very scenic Visp - Zermatt section.

I was at Sunnegga for my very first time yesterday and it was so stunningly beautiful! The best Matterhorn views! More than once I heard people around me saying that it was their best day ever. I was on Klein Matterhorn so very long ago that I can't really comment, other than to say that I remember that the guests we had with us really loved it.

Looks like you have planned your whole trip really well!

I consider myself a semi-local because I travel to Switzerland 4-12 times per year. In fact, I have family there.

Unfortunately, June is the beginning of high season and it's hard to avoid crowds. Take it easy.

In Zermatt, you don't need to ascend to Klein Matterhorn. It's high in altitude, but you will have a more open/majestic view in Gornergrat.

To everyone who chimed in—thank you so much. The advice to buy our Mürren/Schilthorn tickets at the quiet Wengen station to skip the Lauterbrunnen valley queues is brilliant; that is exactly the kind of stress-saver we were looking for.

We have also decided to take your advice and prioritize Sunnegga over Klein Matterhorn for those classic views, and we'll keep the scenic Lötschberg train route (via Kandersteg) as Plan A, weather permitting. Your input really helped us refine the logistics!
