Switzerland & Italy Trip

Hi,

My fiancé and I are heading to Switzerland and Italy for our honeymoon middle of march and trying to determine which places we should stay over the course of 2 weeks (12 nights). While in Switzerland we were thinking of flying into Zurich and taking the train over to Grindelwald staying 3-4 nights with the hopes to do some skiing one day and Jungfrau another day. Do you think it is worth going anywhere else prior to taking the train to Italy and if its just a one night stay to see another area?

When in Italy should we stay in Northern Italy since we are coming from Switzerland or is it easy enough to head south further? Some places we have been looking into are Turin or Bologna, Venice, Florence and Rome. If we could make it to Rome, this is where we would fly out of on the way home. Which places would you stay? Any advice is appreciated as there are so many great places to choose in such a short amount of time.

Thanks
Paula

Instead of flying into Switzerland, have you considered visiting Austria instead? I have found travel there to be much easier and less expensive, and The Alps are also of incredible beauty. Entry into Italy is so easy through the Brenner Pass just south of Innsbruck.

Hi

Congrats

I'm a little confused.

12 nights. 3 or 4 in the Berner Oberland. An overnight into Italy, is hat what you said?

So what about the other 8 or 9 nights? Where will they be?

Hi

Sorry for the confusion. We will be traveling for 12 nights in total. Out of those 12nights 3 to 4 of them will be our stay in the Grindelwald area. We are trying to decide where we should stay those remaining nights.

  1. Should we pick one more stop in Switzerland on our way to Italy

  2. Should we head straight to Italy and what places come highly recommended?

  3. Should we stick with Northern Italy since we will be traveling from Switzerland or is it possible to head to Rome for a couple nights?

Our final stages of our Swiss trip took us to Sonogno in the Val Verzasca then Verona in Italy. From Verona we had a day trip into Venice.
Verona is a bit underrated as a destination.

Fly into Zurich and make your way ASAP to the Jungfrau Region. Stay 4 nights to maximize your chances of ggood weather. Then go to Italy. Torino is lovely and underrated but Venice is my favorite city in Italy. Perhaps 3 nights in Torino or Bologna and the balance in Venice with day trips to Verona and/or Padua if Venice is not enough for you. FLy out of Venice.

Switzerland plus Northern Italy plus Rome is a lot. Stay north with your limited time.

I wouldn't go to Rome on this trip. Stay north for sure. Verona is a romantic city, and as someone else said, underrated.

I’d say definitely take the train from Milan to Rome! Rome was my favorite of all! We stayed in Trastevere section! Lots to do and see! Amaxing readonable food. If I go back to Italy, Rome it is! I found Florence to be ok, and Venice wasn’t that amazing to me.

With respect, jdv, the issue isn’t whether Rome is wonderful, but whether the OP has time to go to Rome on this trip since they are starting in Switzerland and have limited time.

To the OP: this is the dilemma of Italy. So many wonderful places and only so much time. Many of us adore all of the locations you list, but one has to be selective with limited time. You will be back! Italy should be savored. Stay in the north so you are not traveling long distances too often, and plan to come back.
