Switzerland in the end of November

Hello,

Greetings from Vermont, USA! I am planning a trip to Switzerland for my husband's 50th birthday. Switzerland, particularly Wengen, holds a special place in our hearts, and we've visited the country twice before, exploring Wengen, Murren, Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Montreux, Vevey, and Zermatt.

Although my husband's birthday falls on November 30th, which might not be the ideal time to be in Wengen, we are still determined to fly to Switzerland for the entire week (the last week in November). Our plan is to spend at least three days in Wengen, where we are considering renting an apartment since many hotels may be closed during that period. I'm curious if any trails will be open for hiking at that time. While it might be too early for skiing, which we don't mind, any suggestions for activities would be greatly appreciated.

Before heading to Wengen, we are looking for ideas for a 3-4 night stay. We are drawn to non-commercial and unique places, preferably located higher in the mountains or at least in small, distinctive villages. Considering that the end of November might see many places closed, any recommendations would be helpful.

Thank you for any ideas and assistance!

Hi,

If you could, it would really be best to wait even just 2 weeks. Since the Männlichen slopes opened on 9th December 2023, my guess is that this year, Wengen will start to "wake up" for the winter season on 7th December. That way, lifts will be open, and you will be able to access the winter hiking trails.

Bettmeralp (Valais) could work for the second location - again checking opening dates. Or the Engadin (Samedan, Pontresina) if you do not mind travelling a bit further.

Thank you for your reply. Perhaps we should visit Zermatt before Wengen and stick to our original schedule if that makes more sense. I believe skiing will be available in Zermatt by the last week of November.

Zermatt will indeed be more "open for business" around that date.
Still best if you can aim for the week of 2 December, for instance if you plan to fly out on your husband's birthday.
But if you can't and if it has to be the last week in November, don't worry, you'll still have fun in the mountains!
