Switzerland in December

Hi
My wife and I from Australia are travelling through Switzerland in December as part of Christmas market trip through Austria and Switzerland before heading to Finland. We are travelling by train from Innsbruck (Austria) to Zurich for two nights before heading to Strasbourg (France) for three nights. We then return to Switzerland and have eight nights before catching our flights from Geneva to Helsinki

With eight nights to spend in Switzerland exploring christmas markets, beautiful old towns, culture and the alps scenery we are not sure how to plan the time between Basel, Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, Geneva Should we base ourselves in one place and take day trips. We will be travelling by train. Can you suggest a plan and some options for day trips.

Can I assume you will be flying from Zurich to Finland?

Returning to Switzerland from Strasbourg you will pass through Basel, so it is logical to stay there for at least 1 night, or 2 as you wish. Then to Montreux for at least 2 nights and visit Geneva as a day trip. Then to Interlaken. Stop there if you want to visit the mountain towns of Wengen, Muerren, or Grindelwald. Then to Luzern for the remaining time and go to Zurich airport direct from Luzern as it is a 1-hour direct train.

Thanks Sam, we were planning to fly from Geneva to Finland (Helsinki). On the way back from Strasbourg, go Basel, Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux and then Geneva before flying to Helsinki. We prefer to stay at least two nights in a location and not rush ourselves, or base ourselves somewhere and do day trips.

Yes, 2 nights would cover each location would work well. Enjoy!
