We have a couple of days at the end of our trip to travel to Switzerland from Milan by car. Can you recommend the best places to go, and spend the night? Would that be Lugano? It would be at the end of March. Would the roads be icy? Recommendations and input would be great. Thanks,
If dropping car in Switzerland, the drop fee could be excessive. Or are you looking for a RT suggestion?
- You are coming from Milan, but where are you returning to afterwards? Returning an Italian car in Switzerland will be expensive.
- "Would the roads be icy" - depends where you go and what time of year. You don't say whether this is winter or summer.
- Do you want to see towns, lakes or mountains?
The nearest bit of Switzerland to Milan is Ticino. This includes Lugano, Bellinzona (three UNESCO World Heritage castles), Locarno and many other places. For just one night by car, I vote Bellinzona.
As soon as your car crosses the border into Switzerland and you start to drive on the motorway (Autostrada in the Italian language part of Switzerland, Autobahn in the German language part, Autoroute in the French speaking part) you will need a Swiss toll Vignette on the windscreen attached in the approved way in the approved location. It will cost you CHF40. It is the same price if you use it for 5 minutes or 14 months.
Because you are driving in Italy you need an IDP for each driver.
There is considerable other learning about driving in Italy and in Switzerland that we can tell you about to save you very much money.
