Switzerland - Disentis/mustér area

I have an opportunity to stay at a friend’s place in this area. I would like to travel by car since there might be 2 or 3 of us.

What would be the best things to do? Is it a long drive to Zermatt or is there a better way?

Would it be worth it to drive to Lucarno or Lugano for the day?

What else would you suggest for day trips from Disentis? How many days would it be best to stay there?

(Please note that I have been to Zurich a few times before, and of course the beautiful city of Lucerne, although I wouldn’t mind spending another day or two there.)

Thanks!

Why go galavanting all over Switzerland when you are already in such a beautiful area. Drive over the Oberalp Pass to Andermatt. Or the other way to Chur, passing through the Rhine Canyon. Plus leave the car parked and take the train to St Moritz on the Albula line, passing over the Landwasser Viaduct (in every Swiss Travel brochure) and go through the "merry-go-round" of ascending spiral tunnels.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I forgot to mention that I’ll be there mid May, so some of the mountain passes may not be open.

I’m not great with trains and seem to miss them a lot. So I like the convenience of a car. It’s not that expensive when there are 2-3 travelers.

Anyway, I’m still collecting a lot of information, and then I will make the decisions.

We will also go to the Lucerne area to visit with friends.

So any other suggestions anyone else has will be greatly appreciated.

Re driving to Zermatt, looks to be about a 3 1/2 hour drive using the Furka Tunnel car ferry. Drive onto a flatcar and get hauled by train through a 10 mile long tunnel. You can only get as far as Taesch, then park the car in a paid lot and continue by train to the car-free village of Zermatt. Save this for a day when you know you will have clear weather.

Speaking of missing trains, in Switzerland they go at least once on hour. Plus they go on time, like a Swiss watch, or vice versa.

Thanks Sam.

I have another question. Do the trains go through areas that cars can’t get through?

I was wondering if I stayed in the Interlaken area, is it more accessible by train to a lot of areas than a car would be?

From Interlaken, to get to places like Muerren, Gimmelwald, Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg, you must use train and/or cable car. Like Taesch, there is a parking garage next to Lauterbrunnen station to get to all of these, or a paid parking lot at Stechelberg for the cable car to Muerren and Gimmelwald.

Thanks for all the detailed information Sam! I guess I’m not sure about staying in Disentis area.

There’s a possibility I might be staying in Laax. I’ll ask a different question about that area.
