switzerland b and b in late may

plan to head to Switzerland on/about 22 May to beat crowds. If I read correctly, all should be open by then including all elevated trams, etc. Book says should be able to stay most anywhere. Assumption: high vacancy. Do we need to plan lodging in advance or just be able to wing it ? We are a bit more of the "off the beaten path folk". early sixties and like to explore and eat where the locals do.

Air B and B / pension is the way to go? Recommendations? Plan well ahead of just a day or so?

Danke!!

What used to be shoulder season is now quite busy. I would advise locking down lodging well in advance. Where are you looking at going in Switzerland?

When I asked about taking a Switzerland tour in May or June, I was told that higher elevations are usually still snow covered in May. I chose mid-June this year and it was a good time to be there. Not as crowded as was reported in July and August.
If hiking or walking in the mountains is in your plan, May might be not be best.

still planning but 22 May - 01 Jun is the plan. Snow up high doesn't bother us. More important is fewer people and a bit slower pace for us to immerse into each area. Plan to fly into Zurich, maybe out, as well. Possibly out of Bern or Basel. Haven't laid out the plans yet. Attempting to do what is listed in the book, but in fewer days. We will skip a few. Want to spend a couple of days in smaller places. Did I read about a bicycle ride where we basically go down hill the whole way and take a train back to starting point?

Possibly out of Bern or Basel

Bern has no commercial airport. Basel is only 1 hour from Zurich airport, so if you have a direct flight to Zurich, stick to that for a return since Basel only has connecting flights to North America.
