Switzerland and Germany

I'm thinking of taking my 14 year old daughter to Switzerland and Germany in April. Where in Switzerland should we fly into for the shortest train ride to Germany?

We will be visiting for 7-8 days so any recommendations on an itinerary would be greatly appreciated.

thank you!

Basel is closest but there are no transatlantic flights if that is what you want otherwise fly into Zurich.

Where in Germany are you going? Why not fly directly there?
Where are you flying from?
Zürich has flights worldwide. Basel has flights to Europe, Middle East and North Africa and one seasonal flight to Montréal.

The literal answer is Basel, when you walk out of arrivals at Basel airport you can see the Black Forest.
The sensible answer is choose your airport based on your actual destinations, and what flights you can get from wherever you are flying from.

taking my 14 year old daughter to Switzerland and Germany in April.

1) Which April (2019 or 2020)?
2) First decide where you want to go in Switzerland and Germany, how to travel between them then plan your flights to get to your start and end points. It may well be fly into Switzerland (Basel, Zürich or Geneva, or possibly even Milan if you want to start in southern Switzerland), train to A, visit A, B in Switzerland, then D, E, F in Germany, then train to airport G to fly home.

You can still reach Basel from the US with a layover in other European countries (KLM connects in AMS, Air France in CDG, British Airways in LHR etc.)

The question is, what are you looking to do or see in Switzerland and Germany? They're not big countries, but they still have varied offerings.

If you concentrate on the shortest train ride, you are asking the wrong question. Instead, ask "given those 2 countries, what are the best things to see in that time span?"

For example, Zurich and Basel are rather boring, compared to the Alps. Consider Lucerne or Lauterbrunnen or Wengen. Google image those names and see your options.

I would say Zurich. Basel would be probably significantly more expensive.

The OP doesn't say where he (or she) comes from. So to assume they are flying from the USA, or from anywhere else, you are making a possibly erroneous guess.

There is always a problem when posters don't say where they are coming from or don't give details of where they are going.
aitcollins, you unfortunately fall into both categories. Can we have more info please.
