Switzerland 8/23 - 9/2

Greetings,

I 'm fortunate to be headed to Switzerland in late summer. I will be flying into Geneva and doing a week of hiking Tour de Mont Blanc 8/15 - 8/23 and hiking the Bernese Oberland staying in Kandersteg, Switzerland 9/3-9/11, which leaves me with 8/23. - 9/2 to explore Switzerland on my own.

I would love suggestions on how to fill this time. I love sightseeing and have a passion for photography so would like to relax between my 2 weeks of hiking. Possibly getting a base in lauterbrunnen and doing day trips from there.

Thanks for any help offered!!

We always use Lauterbrunnen as a base in the Berner Oberland. (Well we stayed in Mürren once out of five trips but Lauterbrunnen is, IMO, more convenient.) Lauterbrunnen is convenient to fantastic scenery and hiking (light or ambitious) on either side of the valley, easy trip into Interlaken, etc. You can ride the lifts and cogwheel trains to incredible vistas. We've spent 7 to 9 days there one two occasions and never wanted to leave. We always get an apartment to keep costs low and have a relaxing place to hang out. This is our favorite apartment there.

Kandersteg is fantastic! Be sure to take the gondola up to the Oeschinensee...spectacular!
Maybe take the train to Zermatt - it's only a couple of hours from there and well worth seeing.

Lauterbrunnen is more "central" to the area, but we were so glad we stayed in Murren. Being able to sit at a panoramic bar with a glass of wine and the view of the Alps was worth it (or at least for a few days?). If you're open to leaving the Berner Oberland, we thought the countryside outside of Lausanne (e.g. Gruyeres) was also beautiful -- bright green rolling hills with chalets dotting the countryside (just another version of Swiss beauty).
