Hi all,

I want to visit Switzerland on next 5th of June. I am planning to base myself in Zurich. My point of interest are 1.Interlaken 2.Zermatt 3.Jungfrau Region. Please help me with proper plan, A tours and travels ( if necessary) and backpackers hostel details. I will traveling from Copenhagen and will be reaching there in early morning before 9.

Thanks

Don't base in Zurich. Maybe Interlaken, since that will cover Jungfrau region. You can head there directly after stepping off the plane. Skip Zermatt. You don't have time on a 3 day weekend.

General rule for the Alps- budget at least two full days in each location. Weather doesn't always cooperate, so to lessen the chances of loosing your entire visit to rain and fog (obscuring those mountain views you paid so dearly to behold), spread your bets across at least two full days, if not more.

So, pick. Zermatt or the Berner Oberland, and spend all your time in one location. The Berner Oberland is easier to reach from Zurich, if that's your point of entry.

Hi,
Is it a good idea to travel at june 5 to Jungfrau region? if so then what should I do after reaching zurikh?? A straight train to Jungfrau and stay back in interlaken ?? do u need a tour package or I can go by train ?? If I come back on the same day to interlaken then for the next day which place do u recommend ?? I need a proper plan as I have flight at 20.00 clock on sunday. And I am reaching zurich on friday 8 o'clock morning...
As I will traveling alone so I want a cheaper option.

Go to www.sbb.ch to get all the train schedules. at Zurich airport, the train station is across the street from the airport exit door and down the escalator. Follow signs with the little train icon.
There are a minimum of two trains every hour that will get you to Interlaken Ost in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Cost is 73 chf each way. Are you under 26 years old? If so, you can get a 3 day Swiss Youth 2nd cl Pass for 179 chf. So that will cover your ride to/from Zurich airport plus the trains in the Berner Oberland, and 50% discount on most mountain lifts, with the possible exception of the Jungfraujochbahn above Kleine Scheidegg where you may only get 25%.
So if you have a 10 pm flight Sunday, leave Interlaken no later than 6 pm to make your flight.

Its good to have a plan. Just keep in mind that it must be flexible as the weather may not cooperate, so be prepared to change it as the situation evolves. That is easy to do as the train and lift schedules are frequent.

Have you decided on you transport pass? As I see it, you have 2 options, either the Swiss Youth Pass if your age qualifies you, or the Swiss Transfer Ticket with Half Fare Card. The Swiss transfer ticket/half-fare card will cost 201 chf and will cover your train from Zurich airport Lauterbrunnen, return from Lauterbrunnen to Zurich airport. While you are there it will give you 50% off all the trains, buses, and lifts you will use. The trip from Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfraujoch is particularly expensive. Full fare is about 190 chf round trip, so you save 95 chf with the half fare card. Confusingly, the Swiss pass only gives 25% off from Wengen to the Jungfraujoch, but from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is free. Also traveling from Lauterbrunnen to Muerren is free with the pass, and you get 50% on the ride up to the Schilthorn. With the Transfer ticket & half-fare card you would have to pay for these, but get a 50% discount.
You MUST buy the transfer ticket before you arrive in Switzerland, but you can buy the Swiss Pass at the train station at Zurich airport.

Finally, your schedule shows you going from Lauterbrunnen station on arrival and immediately going to the Jungfraujoch. Shouldn't you at least check in to your lodgings and drop your bags first?

Hi Sam,
I forgot to ask about the ticket/pass. My age is 28.And I will be only a small bag ( which I can carry easily at my back )... Please help me with the pass which I should buy (I mean what type) as per my plan I mentioned.

Thanks

The Swiss Pass for 3 days will be 210 chf. Without doing a detailed analysis of exactly all your trips, I would just say that in the end, the difference between the 2 options for you is apt to be plus or minus 10 chf. Because the Transfer ticket is nonrefundable except in special circumstances (like death) and must be bought in advance, it might be safer to go with the Swiss Pass. That way, you can buy it on arrival, so you know nothing will will come up between now and then that will cost you anything.

Hi,
So you mean to say if a buy a swiss pass for 210chf. all the trains I am availing will be free for 3 days and It can be bought on zurikh central station itself?? Please correct me if I am wrong.

See the map in this brochure. It shows all of the rail lines and post bus routes that are free are shown as solid lines. Dotted lines you get a 50% discount, except the ones noted by 1 with a circle around it. So look closely and you will see that the Schilthornbahn above Muerren gets a 50% discount, but the lines from Wengen and Grindelwald to the Jungfraujoch contain note 1, so they only get a 25% discount.
