Switzerland 12.28-12.31 2024 Last minute first visit!

We are planning on flying standby (retired airline employee) with our 16yr old daughter and Zurich looks like a good option for us to fly into. Without spending too much money, what could we do this week Thursday- departing Sunday, 12.31?

Depends on what you want to do, but either head straight to Luzern and spend your weekend there or if you can find a hotel with a room available head up into the mountains to stay in a car free village like Murren, Wengen or Zermatt. Those options will take longer to get to, but would be a unique weekend experience.

Hi amy, are you planning to travel to Switzerland this week (2023) or next December (2024)? The previous poster gave you some good info. Luzern is a short train ride from Zurich and would be a nice place to spend your weekend. Murren is about a 3-hour train ride from Zurich but totally doable. It is a picture perfect village in the mountains with fantastic views. You could also take the train to Berne, a nice city, lots of shopping and restaurants. Hope you have a great trip!

Some Christmas markets continue on into early January - check out info on Bern markets. Some in Innsbruck do, too, and in South Tyrol.

Great input, thanks to all! We are going this week, now thinking train to Lucerne after arriving in Zurich. Where to stay in Lucerne? Maybe a day trip on Friday from Lucerne and spend last night in Zurich…

Lucerne is a good choice. Try Mt. Rigi for an easy day trip from Lucerne. And going back to Zurich for one night depends on time of your flight home and whether or not you just want different scenery for one night on a short trip.

We are in Rome right now, but we were in Switzerland a few days ago. We stayed by Reuss river and Chapel Bridge in Luzern and it's beautiful. What we did was we took a train to Mt. Rigi for a day trip there. The train ride was very scenic and it was stunning up on the mountain.
