Swiss Travel Pass vs. Berner Oblerland vs. Swiss Half Fare

Hello,

I am traveling with my husband and twin boys (age 9) in August to Switzerland. We arrive in Zurich and will stay 5 nights in Gimmelwald and 5 nights in Ascona (from there we leave for Milan). In Gimmelwald, we will be touring/hiking both the Schilthorn and Junfrau areas. I have read a lot but still find this confusing. My understanding is that the Swiss Travel Pass will get us to Lauterbrunnen and would provide discounts to rail/lifts above. I also understand that the Berner Oberland pass covers rail/lifts above.

Question: should I purchase the Berner Oberland pass (for our time in Gimmelwald) and the Swiss Half (to cover our trips from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen and from Lautebrunnen to Ascona)? Thank you in advance!

Gimmelwald is within the GA Area, as is Muerren, so you can get that far with the Swiss Travel Pass. The Berner Oberland Pass only gives a 50% discount on the Schilthornbahn above Muerren, same as the STP.

A 6-day Berner Oberland Pass will cover your travel from Bern to Gimmelwald on Day 1 and from Gimmelwald to Luzern (where you pick up the train to Locarno/Ascona) on Day 6. The price reduction on the 6-day BO Pass with a Half Fare Card (96 CHF) will cover most of the cost of the HFC card (120 CHF). And that card will give you 50% off all the trains, boats, and mountain lifts that are not covered on the BO Pass.

I used the same video recommended by Gene to choose passes for our recent trip.

Yes, I would recommend the HFC plus the BO Pass for your scenario. The BO Pass will cover almost everything you would want to see in the BO area. The exceptions are Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn, which are discounted, not covered 100%. The funicular on Kake Brienz to Hitel Geissbach is not covered at all.

We spent 5 nights in Wengen last summer and used the HFC + BO Pass. I kept track of our journeys, and we would have spent over 900CHF without the passes. Well worth it, and we went ALL over the place without ever worrying about paying for tickets.

We also spent two nights in Stresa on Lake Maggiore. You’re gonna absolutely love both areas. Heaven on earth! The BO Pass will actually cover you all the way to Domodosolla. Then you can book a separate ticket to Ascona.
