Swiss travel pass versus 1/2 price card and BO pass

Hi,

We are going to fly in and out of Geneva in July, and then spend about 7 days using Murren as our base.
We are a family of 4 -- 2 adults, a 17-year old, and a 14 -year old.
We plan to go to the Schilthorn, and are not going to Jungfrau.

I have trying to decide between Swiss Travel pass (which is currently 389 CHF for 8 days, with 2 added on), and buying the 1/2 fare card and the Berner Overland Pass for 8 days (250 CHF +120 CHF for the 3 "adults" , plus 30 CHF for the 14 year old).

What I can't find is the price for the Stechelberg cable car, and whether that is covered by both passes, or only the BO pass?
I am guessing that we will do a fair amount of hiking, and will want to use the various busses, cable cars, etc in the area.

Anyone know the details of the coverage of transportation near Murren?

Thanks in advance,
Lora

The cable car from Stechelberg to Muerren is covered by both passes, as is the bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg.

This site might be helpful: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity#:~:text=The%20Swiss%20Travel%20Pass%20is,line)%20and%20buses%20in%20Liechtenstein.

The BO pass covers the high cables cars above Wengen and Grindelwald 100% (Mannlichen, Eigergliscger, etc). Excluding Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch, which are just discounted.

The STP only offers a discount on the high cable cars. It offers a discount on Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch.

So if you think you might want to go higher up than Wengen and Grindelwald, the BO pass plus the Half Fare card may be better. But the BO pass will not cover you to/from Geneva. So you really need to map & price out what you want to do. If you are in Murren for 7 days (6 nights), maybe you only need the 6 day BO pass? You could use the Half Fare card to get you to/from Geneva.

The B.O Pass does cover part of the way between Geneva and the B,O, If you take the scenic route, it covers from Saanen (near Gstaad) and if you go the fast way, from Bern.

Thank you,
We would end up buying the half price pass and the BO pass if we don't get the Swiss travel pass.
So I think we could use the half price pass to get from Geneva to bern at half price, and then I think we can start using the BO pass when we go from bern to Interlaken and beyond.
It seems like the BO pass definitely covers a lot of the smaller transportation needs we will have when we're up near Murren. For example, I know it covers the cable car at the almendubbl? in Murren. So I think if we are going to stay put in the BO region overall, it gives us better coverage overall. I was just hoping for a pass that would allow me to avoid buying a lot of smaller individual tickets.
Thanks to all who have responded so far.

The BO Pass and the HFC are the right combo for you. We go often and it always works out for us in terms of convenience as well as economy.

No, it only covers half fare, but then so does the Swiss Travel Pass and the Half Fare Card. It is not an expensive ride to begin with. Allmendhubel is a surface funicular, not a cable car. The cable car is the Schilthornbahn, also covered at half fare. The advantage of the B.O.Pass comes into play across the valley, covering the train to Kleine Scheidegg, and the cable lift to Maennlichen, as well as lifts out of Grindelwald.

Thanks, everyone,

With the Swiss Rail Pass deal ending today, I knew I needed to figure this out sooner than later. I think we will just get the half price pass and OB pass which will pay for more in the OB region.

Thanks again,
Lora
