Swiss Travel Pass Question - 6 or 8 day pass?

Hello,

We will be visiting Switzerland from January 8th - January 14th.

We will be arriving at Zurich Airport on January 8th and staying 1 night in Zurich. The following day, we will be heading to Wengen via train and staying for 5 nights. We are planning to stay around the Jungfrau Region. After the 5th night, we will be departing from Wengen going to Salzburg, Austria. (2 adults and a 15 yr old child)

I am confused on my travel pass options and hoping you can help:

Option#1: Swiss Travel Pass for 6 days and pay full fare on departing day going from Wengen to Salzburg.

Option #2:Swiss Travel Pass for 8 days so that it could cover part of the fare from Wengen to Salzburg - is that possible? Using the pass from Wengen to Buchs SG and paying the difference to Salzburg?

If there is anything that you can recommend, that would be great.

Thank you,

Mary

I suggest you buy a 6-day pass and have it start on Jan. 9 for your trip from Zurich to Wengen. The short ride from the airport into Zurich is not worth using up a “pass day”. Just buy tickets for this journey from the machines at the airport station, or at the window if you prefer. Your 15-year-old will need a child ticket as the free Family Pass you get with your Swiss Passes will not be activated until the following day.

I checked the prices and it will be a total of 17 CHF for these tickets—-2 adults @ 6.80 and 1 child @ 3.40

I can explain how to best use the last day of the pass to partially cover your travel to Salzburg on Jan. 14 but I want to check the exact prices first. I’ll be back.

OK, I have the prices. You can buy the tickets for the whole journey from Wengen to Salzburg on Jan. 14 on the SBB website and it will apply your pass discount for the Swiss portion of the trip. It will also offer you a “special price” (Sparangebot) for the international journey advance purchase. This can be quite a saving, depending on the journey.

To use the SBB in English, you can go directly there using rail.ch or this link:

https://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html

Put in Wengen for the start and Salzburg for the finish, the actual date of travel in Euro format (14.01.2022) and a desired start time. I used 9 am. It is a long journey—-8.5 hours at best, with a minimum of 4 changes on the way: Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken Ost, Bern, and Zurich. The final train you board goes from Zurich to Salzburg with no changes if you pick the route with 4 changes. There is one departing at 9:38 am which should be good. Other routes have more changes.

You need to decide the time before you buy online, as the tickets will only be good for that date and time if you choose the “special offer” reduced price.

Once it shows the list of trains, you can check the route using the little red “i” just to the right of the time and route line for that train. On the far right, you will see a red ticket symbol which you push to purchase tickets and it will go to the next page. If it switches to German at this point, just find the “En” button at the top and send it back to English.

You will be asked if this journey is “single” (one-way) or return, and the next window will ask the class of travel (1st or 2d) and the passenger details: age range and any reductions for passes. Touch the menu button for Switzerland price reductions and choose “GA2.cl 1 year/GA subscription” (assuming you have a 2d class pass and are traveling in 2d class. Or select GA 1.cl if you are traveling in first class. GA stands for “general abonniertes” and means subscription; your Swiss Pass qualifies for this although it is not the 1-year subscription pass that Swiss residents use.

Use the “add passenger” button to enter the same information for the other adult and the child (it will ask their exact age). And check the “GA” price reduction for each of them.

The next page will confirm the journey (but it will say Lauterbrunnen to Salzburg, not sure why). And it will show the Standard offer (164 CHF for all 3 of you) and the Special Offer (115 CHF for all 3 of you). Chose the one you want. The next pages will ask about seat reservations. You do not need them for the Swiss trains but you can get them for 5 CHF per person per seat (I wouldn’t bother). Seat reservations are included for the Zurich to Salzburg international train.

I suggest you create an SBB account before you start, rather than booking as a guest.

You could also just buy these tickets from an agent when you get to Zurich, but the Special Offer tix may no longer be available at that time—-they do sell out. But it is only 49 CHF more if you have to pay full price, so if buying online seems intimidating, you have the other option.

And do not forget to request a free Family Card when you buy the passes!
