Swiss travel pass or Bernese Oberland pass?

We are going from Paris to Murren May 28 for three nights then on to Zurich to fly home on 5/31. We will be Hiking and seeing areas around Murren. We will but a ticket to Basel SBB the using trains etc to Murren. Not sure which pass is more economical for 5 of us? Any experience will help me?

First, what are the ages of the 5 people, ie, are any children under 16?

1 senior, 1 adult and 3 young adults in 20’s. I tried to add up fares and think we might spend 200 each.

I’m estimating our transportation cost from
Basel all the way to Zurich is around 300.

Here is my take. The full fare ticket from Basel to Muerren is 80 CHF pp, and the full fare ticket from Muerren to Zurich airport is 95 CHF pp. No what trips are you doing while in Muerren? A roundtrip to Schilthorn is 85.60 CH pp. a round trip from Muerren to Kleine Scheidegg is 94 CHF pp. That is 355 CHF pp, although it could be less as you may hike down a ways at each of these 2, so not have to pay the full round trip price.

Lets say your 300 CHF pp is accurate. if you each bought Half Fare cards for 120 CHF, then you cost per person would be 270 CHF per person. A 4-day Swiss Travel Pass is 281 CHF per adult over 25, and 199 CHF for under 25, but it only gives you 50% discount on the Schithornbahn and 25% discount above Wengen for going to Kleine Scheidegg.

So the Half Fare Card looks like the winner. If any of the 20 somethings are under 25, a 4-day STP will save for them.

Thanks so much! All three are under 25. We are spending night in Zurich. Will go to Schlithorn and Maybe Klein Scheidegg. Wengen. Maybe Lauterbrunnen one day to ride e bikes. I’m thinking Half Fare might be best for us too.

After reviewing the prices you posted I estimated too low. I based it on RS 2020 Switzerland book. I’m going to say 400 each, so I think Swiss pass is better. Half of 400 is 200 plus 120 is 320 total for half Fare. Swiss pass is cheaper for two adults and 3 under 25 than this! I think We have an answer now! I really appreciate your help! Cindy

Do not use the RS guide book for rail ticket prices. Use https://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable.html. That is who you will buy tickets from.

The first price you see will be assuming you have a Half Fare Card already, or be a Super Saver Ticket. To find the full fare price, you have to click on the red box, then unselect Half Fare Card and click on the "Point to Point" box. Do that or each planned journey and you will get the real price. It is now 2023, so prices listed in a 2020 guide book are obsolete.

Since the Swiss Travel Pass does not fully cover many journeys in the Berner Oberland, a Berner Oberland Pass with a Half fare card may be your best option.

Sam is right: get both an HFC and a BO Reg Pass. Buy your ticket Paris to Bern using www.SBB.ch/en and use the fares for HFC. At Bern the BO Reg Pass kicks in and you do not need a ticket. Buy your HFC and the BORP online in advance. When we were there last fall, the BORP was still a paper item but the HFC can be loaded on the SBB app, which is very useful for managing tickets.

When you depart for Zurich, buy your ticket from Luzern to Zurich as the BORP covers you to Luzern.

You can find the area of validity here https://www.berneroberlandpass.ch/verkehrsmittel/.

So I should first but the Falf Fare pass then with that but BO pass? Do I need to get the BO pass soon since it is paper? We’re going late May. I will do this if the BO pass covers more travel and items than Swiss pass. Does it cover the BO cover the Jungfraujoch train?we weren’t going to pay for that but might now do it along with Schilhorn. Thanks again.

The BOP pass gives a 50% discount on the Jungfraujoch above Eigergletcher, and free up to Eigergletcher. The Schilthornban gives 50% discount above Muerren, both with the Half Fare Card and the BOP. You also get a 95 CHF reduction with the Half Fare Card when buying a 4-day BOP.

Along this thread, we are traveling from Paris to bern and then staying in bern for 2 nights, (possible day trip to Gruyère), wengen for 3 days with trip to jungfraunoch, Lucern with day trip to mount pilatus and then flying out of Zurich. I have a family of 5 with 2 adults and kids 6/9/11.

I was going to get the Swiss pass but now wondering if we should get the half fare and Bernese overland pass instead?

Also for the train from Paris to bern, does the half fare pass apply? I was looking at the TGV fast trains.

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for all the valuable information provided on this platform for the fresh travelers. I would like to confirm if my understanding is correct on the BO regular pass and Half Fare Card.

We are travelling for 7 days in Switz starting from Milan, Italy on 8th Sep. During the visit, we'll be travelling Milan to Luzern (Titlis, Pilatus and First). Then Luzern to Interlaken (Grindelwald, Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen, Iseltwald, Aareschlucht gorge, Maanlichen, Wengen, Blausee, Beatenberg, Lake Thun and Brienz, Basel). Then leave for Amsterdam from Basel via train.

My understanding is that Half-fare card combined with BORG is the best economical combination with coverage. Please, any confirmation here can help me with my decision.
Also, is it possible for me to buy train tickets from Milan to Luzern and Basel to Amsterdam at discounted prices using HF card?

Hope to receive your guidance.
