Is the Swiss Travel Pass refundable? Do you have to buy anything extra to make it refundable?

since you don't need to get it until just before your first use, there's not an advantage to getting it and hoping you don't need to give it back...

from the official webpage - only 2 circumstances where Swiss Travel Passes are completely or partially refundable:
Completely:
Tickets are only refundable if returned to the issuing office before the first day of validity.
Partially:
A partial refund of a Swiss Travel Pass/Swiss Travel Pass Flex is only possible under the following circumstances:
- in the event of illness or accident upon presentation for refund at
- the place where the journey is discontinued upon presentation of
- confirmation by a railway office
