Swiss Travel Pass:

My brother and his wife and I are taking a trip to Switzerland. We are renting a car for 2+ weeks, Sept. 8th.- Sept. 27th. and traveling by car for the whole trip except for the last leg, a one day train ride, where we will drop off the car in Lausanne and take a train from there to Zurich. If you think we should make this a two day train ride please let us know.

We do plan to take boat and cable car excursions and visit museums. Is it worth it to get a Swiss Travel Pass and do we need to book ahead (from the US) for the train ride from Lausanne to Zurich, Sept 27th.??? Do you have any thoughts about which train we should book for our journey back to Zurich? Switzerland is our family's roots and if first-class tickets are well worth the price we would like to know!

Thank you so much for your thoughts!!!

Swiss travel pass is not a good idea for you.
Lausanne to Zürich HB cost 73 Franks per person 2nd class. There are three departures per hour and the trip takes two hours. You do not book seats on Swiss trains, they are are turn-up-and go, just go the the station, buy a ticket and get on the next train.

If this is the only train trip you are doing, Why buy a Swiss Pass which cost 210 Franks for 3 days?
First class gives you 2+1 seating instead of 2+2 in second class, and more legroom and width, and cost about 50% more. But second class is plenty roomy enough, no point in paying extra for first class. Second class trains look like this or this.
