I will be traveling the summer in Switzerland for 5 weeks then through Germany and Scandinavia for up to 2 months and would be most appreciative for any thoughts regarding my itinerary and choice of passes while in Switzerland. I believe the Swiss travel pass for 15 continuous days might be the best at the beginning even though I will be in Lauterbrunnen, I will be visiting the villages surrounding there and using the lifts at half price...then, for June 28th to July 12, I was thinking another 15 day pass as I will be doing excursions daily. Then from July 12-17 start using an interail pass (I have Irish citizenship) which I plan to use in the rest of Europe. I don’t feel the need for another Swiss pass since I just plan to stay around Appenzell. Thank you for your input. Here is the itinerary..
June 13….Zurich to Lauterbrunnen
June 13-20 Lauterbrunnen with day trips to surrounding villages
June 20-24 Gimmelwald with possible excursions
June 24-26 Lucerne
June 26-29 Nyon excursions to Geneva and Annecy France which might not be covered by STP
June 29-30 undecided
July 1-3 Zermatt
July 4-17 Appenzell
July 17 on to rest of Europe
You may want to look into doing the Half Fare Card + 10 day Berner Oberland Pass for for your Lauterbrunnen/Gimmelwald portion. This pass will be more useful to you in the mountains than a Swiss Travel Pass. And since you're not planning on moving around a lot in Appenzell, etc. then the HFC would get you 50% off for the times you do use lifts/trains and it would also get you a discount on the BO pass + any trips not covered under the BO pass. You do realize that Lauterbrunnen and Gimmelwald are literally 20 minutes from each other, right?
