I’ve seen different information regarding the Swiss pass. Will I need a paper copy to show to get on board, or can I download my pass in the mobile app to show when boarding? I read somewhere that they charge 5CH if you use the app. I also read I had to have a card with my photo. Is this true? Does anybody know if this is true or what is the procedure? I’m heading out in a month.
You can either buy it online or in person at a SBB office at Zurich and Geneva Airport train stations and other train stations throughout Switzerland. I don't know about the 5CH as I have only bought it in person.
Once you bought it some find it more convenient to show the paper copy so they don't have to fiddle with logging into their phones when the conductor comes by.
You must show your passport with the pass when the conductor comes by.
Some will accept a paper copy of your passport but carry your physical passport no matter what.
I am going and buying a 4day STP in the next couple of weeks for the 5th time since 2017. I like to buy it in person in order to get the paper map that comes with it and the laminate cover that protects the pass in cardboard like the boarding passes you get at the airport.
I think you are confusing the long-term pass that the locals purchase. We usually buy our pass online the week before, so we have an electronic copy that can be added to your Apple Wallet. That way, you have hard copy and electronic copy of your pass, and avoids problems if you lose the paper copy.
Have a great trip!
