Hello. We will be heading to Switzerland soon. We will be staying three nights in Zermatt, five nights in Wengen, and three nights in Lucerne. I was thinking the best option would be to get the 15 day Swiss Travel Pass. Is there a better option I am not considering? We plan to do Zermatt hikes, Mt. Pilates and Rigi, Interlaken and hikes in the Lauterbrunnen region. Thanks for your help.
Probably the simplest solution. Not always the lowest price solution, but very convenient. You will still have to buy discounted tickets for lifts in Zermatt and Wengen and and Pilatus, but Rigi is covered.
Alternative is the Half Fare Card, then buy Saver Day Passes well in advance for your arrival day from Zurich airport (I assume) to Zermatt. The Half Fare Card is usually the lowest price option, but you will have to buy tickets for each journey.
I readily pay for the convenience of the STP, and usually find more ways to use it once I'm in country.
You're going at a great time. Enjoy!
Be aware that the STP does not cover “recreational” routes 100%. So routes to places where there are no residences. Like above Kleinne Shcheidigg, or to First in Grindelwald. Schinygge Platte, Harder Kulm, etc. You may be better off with a regional pass for the BO time, either the BO Pass or Jungfrau Pass. Connect big cities using the Saver Day Pass. You have to price out what you plan to do, then compare options.
Agree with Sam and Pat. Purchased 15 Day Swiss Travel Pass last August on 13 day trip. The convenience is stellar, and I had given up trying to calculate daily cost. Note to establish SBB account first, then purchase tix through the App. This way they will appear on your phone.
I notice that here and other places people point out that the STP does not cover "above Kleine Scheidegg" but I just want to add that this is the advice I was given before taking the train from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg thinking my STP would cover that train ride... it does not and the fine we had to pay on board was not cheap. So be aware that if you are coming from Wengen it's not just above KS that is not covered... Wengen to KS is not. Get your discounted ticket at the Wengen Station to avoid the fine. Live and learn. It was our own fault for not checking, but we read so many times that it was 'above' KS that we never thought it might not be covered. Just sharing what we learned.
