Swiss travel Late Aug '17 clothing

Hi everyone,
I'm traveling to Switzerland for a 2 week trip beginning Aug 30 and ending Sept 12. . We start with 3 days in Appenzell, 2 days in Lucerne, 4 days in Murren, 3 days in Lausanne. I'm wondering about clothing for the trip. I'm assuming fleece jacket with a windbreaker/ rain jacket will suffice as a jacket and perhaps earmuffs and light gloves . I'm from Wi so a little hardier than most. i will be packing light but wondering if a pair of shorts or capris are necessary or just long pants. Also I assume we should expect rain in the mountains. Thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Your wardrobe for this time sounds well thought-out. When I went to Switzerland during that time of year, we got a frigid cold, rainy, and windy front, (it was still August) and a store set out a bucket of gloves for sale for the occasion, for which I was grateful. The cold front passed after a few days and the temperature became more comfortable. I doubt you'll need shorts. I didn't even need shorts when I was there last month, in July. I noticed most Swiss women wore light beige capris/ankle high pants or long summery skirts and dresses then. Although the very young adults and teens wore short-shorts.

Add the cities you'll be visiting to your iPhone weather app, so you'll know how to pack a few days before your trip, and you'll know how to dress each day. I also recommend the Swiss weather app: http://www.meteoswiss.admin.ch/home.html?tab=overview
to put on your phone, for more details about the weather forecast. Of course, Swiss weather is always full of surprises ....

Hi Linda
Thanks again for the ideas. I think I'll bring my hiking capris and long pants. Wisconsin has fickle weather as well so I know to be prepared. Lol.

Ouch ! I was actually planning to pack some shorts for travel to Lucerne. This post was definitely helpful.
I am sorry to intrude on your post here ,but I had one question on what kind of shoes do I need to bring to go up Jungfrau and Mt Pilatus ?The place I live, its not exactly easy to buy winter gear .So I was planning to get them when I am in Murren ,which is my first stop in Switzerland .Is that a good idea ?

Weather here is unpredictable, but the higher the elevation, the cooler it is so layers are essential. A pair of shorts do not take up much room, but it can get warm here even in the fall. One other thing to consider packing - tights. I have never worn capris, but when the weather gets cool, tights are easy to put on under shorts, a skirt or dress and keep your legs warm and take up no room in your bag.

I think respondents to Mary's inquiry here should definitely include what type of shoes for women should be packed. It looks like Mary, you will be spending half your time in the mountains & half in the cities. Open-toed sandals may be chic but in the rain, can be terribly uncomfortable. I am in Europe at least once a year & in the summer months (Jun-Aug), I wear a pair of Salomon waterproof low-cut hiking shoes & the rest of the time, I have a wonderful pair of really comfortable all-black mid-cut waterproof Timberland hiking boots. Note "waterproof". Nothing will spoil a vacation faster than wet feet especially if blisters develop. When deciding what to pack, I believe in taking care of your feet first & working up from there. Have a great trip!

For shoes or sandals, opt for comfort and practicality over style. If you are planning to hike, you'll want a pair of hiking boots. If you don't have a waterproof pair, spray with water repellent, it will help. Bring extra socks so if they get wet, you can change. If you are not planning to hike, sneakers are the most common and comfortable shoe to bring.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking forward to my trip. Tom, I will be bringing a pair of low top hiking shoes which are comfortable and are broken in. I did waterproof them. I will also have a pair of sneakers for backup. I'm not big on sandals or "cute" shoes anyway! Rather be comfortable.

We were in Switzerland in 2016 and 2017, end of June to mid July for both years. The weather was hot. We did a day hike to Ebenalp and the surrounding area in the Appenzell region and also returned to Murren. We also went up to Mt. Pilatus in 2016 and shorts with a light fleece jacket was very comfortable. We wore shorts the entire time we were there because the weather was very warm in these areas. We packed our fleece and rain jackets but didn't have to use them this year. Last year, we went up to the top of Jungfrauch and the Shiltzhorn which you'll definitely need a fleece jacket. Enjoy your trip!
