Swiss Train Pass & Itinerary question

A few questions - I am going in may (age 24 so the youth swiss travel pass is cheaper yay) this is my honeymoon so there's 2 of us, below is my itinerary.

Arrival Geneva

Geneva to laterbrunnen 2 nights -- Rail pass for travel yes

laterbrunnen to grindelwald 1 night -- rail pass no?

grindelwald to lucernne 2 nights -- Rail pass yes? no?

lucerne to interlake 1 night Rail Pass -- yes? no?

interlaken to geneva 1 night -- Rail pass yes

Fly out next morning. Can you help me determine what days/how many days I should get the flexi pass? It looks like trains are 1 way 10CHF from grindelwald to lucernne (I know it doesn't include cable cares etc) so I assume we should do that instead of the pass that day for travel purposes. Are those google search prices accurate? Sounds like to me I should do the rail pass 2-4 times on this trip. (I''ll stuff the cable cars and things on the days we use the pass for discounts)

I don’t know what “google”site you used to fine fares but that 10 CHF from Grindelwald to Luzern is incorrect.

Use the Swiss rail website SBB.ch, but note that the prices shown on the first page assume you have a half-fare card, so they must be doubled to get the actual regular fare.

I see that fare for 37-44 CHF one-way, depending whether you get a regular fare or saver fare for that train (saver fares are limited to specific trains and they do sell out).

With a 3-day Flex pass at 267 CHF, your 3 trips need to average out at 89 CHF to make it pay. Only the 2 longest trips will reach that level,m ut if you add the benefit of cablecar discount to a third day (maybe at Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald), or better yet, Luzern for the Rigi roundtrip) it would make the 3-day Flex pass worthwhile.

Edit: I totally agree with the comments below about combining your Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald stays into one or the other to reduce the hotel changes. Every time you do that, you have to pack up, check out by 10 or 11, carry your bags to the new location, and then you won’t be able to check in there until later, so you have to store your bags at the hotel or the train station.

For your return to Geneva for your flight home, you could also eliminate one hotel change. If you take the direct train from Luzern to Lausanne ( 2 hours 17;minutes) you could overnight there and reach the airport in an hour by train the next morning. Or transfer from Lausanne to the smaller lakeside village of Morges, with a hotel right on the lake, and be only 38 minutes from the airport. This way, instead of 5 hotels (or six if you spend a night in Geneva upon arrival) you have only 3.

Don't understand why you are staying in Interlaken , Grindelwald, and Lauterbrunen.. That's too much checking in and out of hotels, and they are all in the Berner Oberland. Pick one location, and unpack and enjoy the BO. Most folks here recommend Murren or Wengen, which is actually staying IN the Alps.
I'd suggest reading all the entries under the Switzerland section here on the Forum- review the posts for the past 12 months. There's a wealth of practical info already posted.
Have a great trip in this beautiful country!

Quintin611, I cant help but ask about the itinerary. You're going to spend a lot of that honeymoon on the train and in train stations.

Distances are deceiving when you look at the map. It takes a lot of time to get around these places due to the mountains.

If I understand you right, you are going right to Lauterbrunnen (via Interlaken). Really only one day in Lauterbrunnen before you go up the valley a little to Grindelwald, where you have about half a day (no time for Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn). Then leave for Luzern where you have about 1 1/2 days. Then backtrack to Interlaken (which you have already passed through twice). But have less than half a day there. And less than half a day in Geneva.

Since you're spending little time in Geneva, why go there at all? For what you're planning Zurich will have more non-stop options from the US (assuming) and is more convenient.

With only seven days,I would pick two locations to stay. I think you could easily consolidate all that middle time for either Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. Luzern as the other place to stay. Fly into Zurich, and take the train from the airport direct to Luzern. Three nights there, then on to Luaterbrunnen for four nights. Fly home from Zurich or Geneva.

A good options for a pass is often to get the "Half Fare Card". This gives you 50% off on all transportation, and also on mountain transports like cable cars and rack railways. This is often the best option if you are not doing a "Grand Train Tour" of Switzerland.

Then in the areas itself get a local pass. For example in the Bernese Oberland you can either get the Berner Oberland Regional Pass, or the "Top Of Europe Pass". (Google this). This gives you unlimited travel on local public transport and many mountain transports. I often suggests people to just get such a pass, and then just go everywhere with it. Just roaming a whole day on cable cars and trains in the Jungfrau Area without having to worry about buying tickets each time is how this area is to be enjoyed...

Hey all, Thank's for your input. I will definitely be changing my itinerary I do realize how much coordination that is. Probably 3 nights laterbrunnen and 1 night in grindelwald (I do really want to stay there) with 2 nights lucernce for more relaxed stay and head home. Ill be doing the swiss flex travel pass, thank you all!
