Swiss train from ZRH to a single destination and back only

I recall on SBB website that there used to be an airport-destination-airport ticket years back, but this doesn't seem to be the case any longer.

If you are only planning on taking a train from ZRH to Zermatt, then back a week or so later, would the best course of action (and most cost effective) be a Saver Day Pass? If so, how far in advance can you buy these? I'm looking at doing this in just over two months from now.

Thank you for the help and advice.

You can buy super saver tickets. Those are half the price of regular tickets but good only for a specific train and time. Super saver tickets generally sell out as most locals buy them as most have a Half Fare Card which gives them 50% off. You can only buy super saver 30 days in advance. The drawback with super savers is that if your flight into Zurich is delayed you will have to buy a new ticket as again they are only for a specific train and time . There is no flexibility like regular tickets which are good for any train on a given route and day.

Just echoing swiss life’s suggestion to get the saver day pass for your trip from the airport to zermatt. If you buy the ticket at the airport on the day you arrive, it will cost 129 CHF without any discounts. And that’s 2nd class.

Edited to add: Unlike the super saver ticket which is train specific, you can take any train with the saver day pass.

For your trip back to the airport, if you can commit to a specific train (time and day), I’d look at the super saver ticket as jazz mentioned. If not, I’d at least get the saver day pass.

You can find info. on both types of tickets here:

https://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-tickets/buying-options/saving.html

It’s important to note there are no refunds or exchanges on the advance purchase tickets.

Enjoy Zermatt. I was there for just a day this past June and can’t wait to go back to spend some more time.
