I am a neophyte with regard to railroads in Europe and I have some basic questions.
We want to go from the Zurich train station to Beaune, France in mid-July. I see several trains on the schedules.
Should we buy a SBB ticket or SNCF ticket for Zurich to Beaune?
We’d like to have a reserved seat. When is the best time to purchase these tickets? How?
buy from where you will be boarding the train. In this case, SBB. An easy link in is https://www.sbb.ch/en or use the SBB app. Note that Swiss people mostly have a half fare card, so the default price on the site assumes this and for entirely within Switzerland defaults to half price. You can switch the feature off.
The best way is the direct TGV train to Dijon leaving Zürich HB at 9:34 with one simple change at Dijon and arriving, unless you want to take a while in Dijon (you can if you want) in Beaune at 12:30. The frequent train from Dijon to Beaune only takes 18 minutes.
It is too early to get tickets yet. On that TGV all seats come with a reservation.

yes, there are several possible routes - pick the one you like. It may be more or less expensive depending on route. The one I highlighted is the simplest and fastest, only taking 2h56. Most of the other possibilities take an hour or more longer.
Thank you so much, Nigel. This is just what I wanted to know.
