Swiss Rail Pass + Half Fare Card?

This is the suggested ChatGPT itinerary for our 5-day trip.

I've searched the past topics and watched YouTube videos. We are going to download the SBB app. Do we need both the Swiss Rail Pass and the Half Fare Pass? We will be using trains, ferries, and cogwheels during our stay. The Saver Day Pass?
I'm a bit boggled.

June 2 – Gentle Arrival Day
Train Zurich Airport → Lucerne (~3 hrs, easy and scenic)
Check in
Easy orientation walk:
Chapel Bridge
Old Town squares
Lake promenade

June 3- friends arrive

June 4 – Mountain + Lake Day

Option A (More dramatic): Mount Pilatus
Golden Round Trip: boat + cogwheel train + gondola.
Panoramic ridge walking at the top.

Option B (Easier + gorgeous): Mount Rigi
Boat to Vitznau + cogwheel up.
Lovely ridge trails — less intense, very scenic.

Evening: stroll the Musegg Wall towers if open.

June 5 – Scenic Train to Montreux

Lucerne → Montreux via GoldenPass Line (~3 hrs).
Sit on the right side, leaving Lucerne for lake views.

Montreux — June 5–7

Montreux feels Mediterranean compared to Lucerne. Palm trees. Lake Geneva. Vineyards

June 5 – Lakeside Evening

After arrival:
Walk full flower-lined promenade toward Chillon Castle

June 6 – Vineyards + Castle Day

Morning:
Visit Chillon Castle early (before cruise groups arrive)
Walk or ferry back

Afternoon:
Train up to Lavaux vineyards (UNESCO site)
Easy vineyard hiking between villages like St-Saphorin & Epesses
Wine tasting with lake view

June 7 – Montreux → Lyon

Train Montreux → Lyon (~2.5–3 hrs, easy border crossing).

Do we need both the Swiss Rail Pass and the Half Fare Pass?

No. One or the other. The Swiss Travel Pass (works on buses and boats too) covers most mountain lifts at half fare already. The Rigibahn is fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Note: Zurich to Lucerne is a little over one hour by train.
Yes, download the SBB app to work out train schedules and duration.
Chillon is covered by the STP. The beauty of the STP is that one doesn't need to buy tickets- for the modes that are covered, just jump on, anytime.
What are you doing June 3? Will you be using any transportation?
There are several u-tube videos attempting to explain the various passes. Everyone is confused. Once you make a decision, don't look back. Have a great trip!

It is a little late to think about Saver Day Passes, as now, for June, the prices exceed cost of just a point-to-point ticket, at least for Luzern to Montreux, with or without a Half Fare Card.

What I would consider is getting a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass beginning June 4, and just buying tickets for Zurich airport to Luzern on June 2. The 6-day STP is 399 CHF and the 4-day is 309 CHF. The point-to-point ticket for ZRH to Luzern is 31 CHF. You are only doing stuff in the city June 2 and 3, and you will get a guest card from your hotel giving you free public transportation within the city of Luzern. So that will save you 59 CHF. No free museum entrances, but then you each have an extra 59 CHF for any of those.

I can second this. Make the decision, spend the money. Don't dwell on it. Enjoy your trip!

Thank you, everyone!

We don't really have plans for June 3. Our travel companions arrive that day, so a lot depends on what time they get in. If it's later in the day, we may do option B from June 4.
