Swiss Rail Pass extras

Hi there. I'm interested in getting a Swiss Rail Pass with flex days. I understand it also acts as a Swiss Museum Pass. Do you know if I can use the museum pass without taking up one of my flex travel days? If so, will that be true even for free sites?

Similarly, I'm wondering if I can use the pass for the free trains/lifts in Berner Oberland without that counting as a travel day as well. Thanks!

Hi Nicole,

What do you mean by 'the free trains/lifts in Berner Oberland'???

We're Swiss, we do not do 'free' ;-)

Please read the restrictions carefully - museum days are only on travel days.

Thank you. It's very helpful to know that the museum pass is only valid on travel days. Apologies for not being very clear with my question about the trains/lifts in Berner Oberland. On Rick Steves' website, it says that with the Swiss Pass, "All trains and lifts up to Mürren/Wengen/Grindelwald are covered." I assume that with a flex Swiss Rail Pass, they're "covered" or free only on a pass travel day as well.

Thanks again!

Yes, a "covered" thing is only covered on a pass day. But on non-covered days between your first and last covered day, your flexipass acts as a half fare card. This includes the lifts above Muerren/Wengen/Grindelwald. Note that once you've used your last covered day, your pass is done (even though it's for a certain number of days within a month, the last covered day ends the validity of the pass, no matter how many days are left in that month). So, to make it work well you have to use a covered day near the beginning and the end of your trip.

If you can do that, and can follow Rick's advice to see museums and take boats on the same day you take a train, you can make the flexipass work. I can't make those restrictions work, and that's part of why I opted for the full Swiss Pass.
