First time in Switzerland this July and trying to decide on the Swiss Rail Pass. Will it cover any of the cost from Bern to Salzburg?

It only covers you to the Swiss border, probably to Buchs SG. You might just find that you can buy a low cost Sparschiene ticket at www.oebb.at, at least for the Zurich to Salzburg section, as that is a direct Railjet train, operated by the Austrian National Railway. These tickets are purchased in advance and are train specific and nonrefundable, like airline tickets.
