I'm planning a 15 day trip to Switzerland this summer and plan on getting the 15 day consecutive Swiss Rail Pass. We are planning on going on the routes for the Scenic Rail Journeys: Golden Pass, William Tell Express, Bernina Express and Glacier Express. We are basically doing Rick's Best 2 week trip in Switzerland.
Reading his book, it's a little confusing when a reservation is actually needed if we have the Swiss Rail Pass. It seems like there are standard regional trains on most of the rail lines so if we don't have to go on a premium train (which I think the regional train where you can open windows is probably better), then it doesn't seem like reservations are generally necessary. It seems like for the Golden Pass, William Tell Express and Bernina Express, that with a Swiss Rail Pass, no advanced reservation appears to be needed. However, he does write if planning to go direct from St. Moritz and Zermatt, than the pricier Glacier Express is the only option, implying a reservation is necessary.
Does anyone have any more information on when a reservation is absolutely needed to make sure you can get on the train? All of our hotel reservations are set so I wouldn't want to get stuck not being able to get from point A to point B because we didn't make a reservation.
Thanks in advance.
