Swiss pass help for July vacation!

Family with 2 parents and 4 teenagers traveling 7/1 through 7/11. Can you please advise on the most advantageous and least expensive train pass options, assuming we will be visiting Schilthorn and using the cable cars frequently to travel up to and down from Murren where we are staying?

7/1 - land in Zurich and take train to Murren
7/1 - 7/9 - stay in Murren with possible day train trip to visit another town/city
7/9 - train to Luzern
7/11 - train to Zurich airport

I thank you in advance for your guidance!!

I won't say this is definitely the cheapest option, but if you don't sit in your hotels, and do some travelling up down and around the mountains in the area; then I would consider the Jungfrau Pass for your time in Mürren. Website: https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/jungfrau-travel-pass/
Then just buy the other tickets individually (Zürich airport - Interlaken - Mürren, Interlaken - Luzern and Luzern - Zürich airport.

Chris, I don't believe the Jungfrau Region Pass covers the gondola between Mürren and Gimmelwald and Stechelberg. At least I do not see that route covered on their website and we had to pay out-of-pocket a few years ago when we had the Jungfrau Pass and stayed in Mürren. Maybe that has changed but it does not look like it on the map of coverage. That is why we now always buy a Berner Oberland Regional Pass.

To the OP, the Berner Oberland Reg Pass covers you from Luzern or Bern, so you only have to buy your arrival tickets from Zurich to one of those cities and then on to Mürren using the pass. This map shows the area of validity. You will pay extra to go to the Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.

And how old are your teenagers? If < 16 years old they can travel 100% free with you as long as you get a free Swiss Family Card.

With teenagers you're probably going to want to take them to the Jungfrau on the opposite side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley from Murren. It's an expensive trip, but the Swiss Family Card still works for your teenagers < 16 years old. You'll receive a discount on this trip if you have a Swiss Travel Pass BUT you'll receive a larger discount if you have the Swiss Half Fare Card. The savings on the Jungfrau Trip (full priced ticket) from the HFC will practically pay for the cost of the HFC. All Swiss trips are discounted 50% with the HFC.

If you buy a pass such as the Berner Oberland Regional Pass or the Jungfrau Pass then you're bound to that area. STPs and HFCs work all over Switzerland.

It would take a lot of math and advance planning / crystal ball to predict the cheapest total that you could end up paying for all transportation during the course of your trip. And even doing the math could still yield more than one option at similar prices. So focus on the best fit for your area of coverage and number of travel days - e.g., up to 8 continuous days on the Jungfrau Travel Pass, choice of 8 or 10 continuous days on the Berner Oberland Pass, and choice of 8 or 15 continuous days on the Swiss Travel Pass for the whole country.

Since you are going to be in Murren for a week, you can definitely benefit from a pass, and I tend to agree with Laurel that the Berner Oberland Pass is probably best. With a week AND a pass, you can cover Murren, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Grindelwald and accompanying trails very efficiently.

I've been to this area a half dozen times with teens and another half dozen with older friends, always for a week or more. I've created a website that describes our dozen favorite hikes in the area, with maps and pics. Teen tested! I've sent it to your private mail. Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the cable cars, etc, up in Murren? And do you know if it covers the Schilthorn?

Thanks for all the input!

Yes, it will cover the trip to Murren and this year all the way up to the Schilthorn.
