Just researching our Switzerland trip for October and one plan is to fly into Milan stay 1 night (23hrs flying......the joys of living is Australia) train to Zermatt, stay 2 nights, catch the Glacier Express to Chur, stay 1 night, train to Luzern stay 3 nights, train to Zurich 3 nights. Looking at doing day trips from Luzern and Zurich. Any suggestions where to visit in a day with not too many train changes?
Be sure to take in the Lauterbrunen Valley above Interlochen....just splendid. I'd stay more time toward the mountains or in the mountains than in Zurich.
Wow, only 10 days coming from Australia, or are you moving on from there? 3 nights in Zurich? Relatives, friends, business?
Here is an alternate. 2 nights in Varenna on Lake Como, its just 1 hour from Milan. Then train to Tirano and Bernina Express (or regular train) to Pontresina for 1 night. From there Glacier Express to Zermatt for 2 nights, then Lauterbrunnen for 2 nights and Luzern for 3 nights.
Skip Zürich and use the nights elsewhere. Luzern to Zürich airport is only 70 minutes by train, so unless your flight out is really early you don't need to stay in Zürich the last night.
I like Sam's plan even better: Milan - Lake Como - Bernina Line - Glacier Express Line to Zermatt - Jungfrau Region - Luzern.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions....we are going to Croatia for 10 days after Switzerland.
I have looked at the Como-Bernini Express-Glacier Express-Zermatt..we have been to Como 4 times but not to Vareena and i nearly booked there last April but the restaurant in the hotel was closed and the steps of the town concerned me with my bad knee..
We have 3 weeks holiday and i don't want to be hopping on and off trains with luggage as we have done this many times over the years ....getting to some of the towns take 2-3 changes.....I want it to be a 'relaxing' holiday....and any scenery contrast to Australia is relaxing for us.
Saying all that i will certainly look at all your suggestions do the bookings and not give my husband too much information just get him to 'follow me'.
