We will be taking the train from Zurich to Lucerne (using Lucerne as our base for day trips, 4 days), then train from Lucerne to Dijon.
Is the half fare card worth it?

Depends on where the day trips are to. Half Fare Card is only good as far as Basel on the way to Dijon. Also, any kids under 16 on this trip?
If the full fare tickets exceed 240 CHF per person, then the card will pay off. Look up prices for each journey at www.sbb.ch/en, noting the initial price shown assumes you already have a Half Fare Card, so double that price to get the full fare price.
