Vacationing in northern Italy next month but spending the last 2 days in Switzerland to fly back to US from Zurich. Do we need to have some Swiss Francs on hand while there or can we spend euros? Thanks in advance
You will do better with a credit card than with euros in cash (some tourist-oriented places in Zurich may take euros, but often at an unfavorable rate, and any change you get will almost certainly be in Swiss francs).
You are probably OK planning to tap-and-pay, but having some small bills and coins for tips and the occasional pay toilet is a good idea. Maybe get 50 CHF in small denominations like CHF 10 bills and 2 and 5 Franc coins.
I'm with Laurel, always have some small bills and coins on your person. Just to be safe.
However, dump them before leaving, nowhere else in Europe (or the US for that matter) is interested in them.
50 sounds like a lot for two days. I don’t think we used that in 10 days.
I'd make the smallest possible withdrawal from an ATM--which may not be small enough. However, you can wait until shortly before departure and use the remaining cash to pay for part of a meal.
