My husband and I will be spending 4 days based at Lake Maggiore in northern Italy (late May). I'd love to take a scenic day trip into Switzerland. Any suggestions of where to go or what to do?
Go to lake Lugano, Locarno and Luzern
Lugano is a wonderful little town. I loved it.
ck,
Where are you going to be based on Lake Maggiore? One very easy day trip is to travel to Domodossola and then take the scenic Centovalli Railway to Locarno, Switzerland. Spend the day in Locarno and then return to Stresa by boat in the early evening. It's a very nice trip! If you need a few tips on things to see in Locarno, post another note.
Be sure to take your Passports, as you will be in a different country.
Thanks so much to both of you. Those are great ideas.
Ken—We will be based at an awesome little Airbnb lakeside in Comnago, just outside of Stresa.
And sure Ken, would love to hear suggestions on what to do in Lugano.
I mean Locarno!
ck,
Locarno is a beautiful city and there are a few possibilities you could consider......
- Stroll along the lakeside and admire the view.
- Spend some time in the Casino
- Take a trip up the hill to the impressive Madonna del Sasso Franciscan Monastery.
- Take the cable car to Cardada and CImetta (incredible views)! There's a small hotel / restaurant next to the top cable car station, where you can enjoy a fine hot meal or a "cool one" on their patio and admire the scenery while Paragliders sail by.
- Do some window shopping in the stores around Piazza Grande. I always like looking at the displays in the Bucherer Jewellery shops, admiring the CHF 10K Rolex watches that I could never afford. There are often have car shows and such in Piazza Grande, as well as a large film festival (July?).
Hope you have an enjoyable trip there!
