We will be traveling with 6 people in late Sept. 2014. We will be renting a van and plan to travel to
Grachen-Zermatt and Lauterbrunnen area. In order to take the mountain trains and lifts, would it
be more cost effective to purchase one of the Swiss travel cards or pay as we go for each of the
trains and lifts. We will be 3 nights in both areas and plan on some hiking and seeing towns and mountains.
Thank you for a response.
For the Lauterbrunnen area, it largely depends if you intend to go to the tops of the Jungfrau and/or Schilthorn. If no, you might get by on day-to-day point-to-point tickets. If yes, note that the round-trip fare from Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfraujoch is about $190. It's about $105 for a R/T ticket to/from the Schilthorn. You really don't need any kind of Swiss pass or card until your total transportation fares go over about 250CHF. The Swiss 1/2 fare card costs 120CHF and is good every day for 30 days. It will work on everything in the B.O. and the Zermatt area as well as the rest of Switzerland.
