Swiss Alps in late November

Visiting our son who is studying nearby, and we have 2-3 days to spend in the Alps, hoping to park at Interlaken and ride the Golden Pass and take a funicular or two up to some easy to moderate hiking. Would love to take Rick's advice and stay somewhere in the Alps instead of Interlaken, but I know this is an "off" time of year. Has anyone had any experience at this time of year? Rick noted that Murren and Zermatt are basically abandoned, but I'm hoping for recommendations of where we can eat/sleep. Thanks.

Some hotels do operate year-round in the resorts above Interlaken. Mürren is quite small so it might be very quiet in late Nov, but Wengen is larger and Grindelwald larger still (in terms of # of hotels at least). Both will have some options.
Hiking in late Nov might be ambitious, though, and it is a time of the year when staying in Interlaken might not be the worst idea; it makes it easier to regroup and go elsewhere (Bern, Thun) if the weather is definitely not "Alps-friendly".

Just got home from a 10 day Switzerland trip…..we stayed in Wengen and it puts you right near the train station, in the heart of the gorgeous alps…..take the Mannlichen-Kleine Scheidegg hike- very flat, even if you do encounter some snow as we saw last week…..then you can train back down to Wengen……Interlaken is great but you want to get up in the mountains!

Thank you both! I was just researching Wengen and Grindelwald, so it sounds like I'm on the right track.

Jane - can you recommend a hotel in Wengen?

November is indeed off season. Many of the mountain lifts are closed during this time, as are hotels and restaurants. Unfortunately that means some of the popular hikes, such as Männlichen - Kleine Scheidegg mentioned above will be closed as well.

  • Wengen - Kleine Scheidegg closed Nov. 4 - 29
  • Männlichen closed Oct. 21 - Dec. 6
  • Grindelwald First closed Oct. 28 - Nov. 29
  • Harder Kulm closed for the season Dec. 2
  • Schynige Platte closed for the season Oct. 21

I think that Interlaken is the best choice for where to stay at this time of year.

November is the time when everything shuts down for maintenance and preparation for ski season. If I were going in November I'd probably choose to stay at lower elevation on a lake. You may want to look into waterfront options on Lake Luzern, such as Brunnen, Vitznau, etc. where you have options to go up to higher elevations if you have nice enough weather, but if not, you can do a lake cruise, walk around Luzern or even take the Gotthard tunnel to the sunny side of the alps to visit Lugano, Morcote, etc. From places like Brunnen you also get gorgeous mountains views surrounding the lake, so you still get that feel even at lower altitude, while in Interlaken the best views require you going up into the valleys/mountains. While I love Murren, Wengen, etc. I think in November you'd find everything pretty much closed down. Interlaken is just not a beautiful place to stay. It's a transportation hub with a lot of souvenir type stores. Luzern area would be a much better option for staying at a lower elevation for that time of year with it's historic old town and lots of lake front options. I'd also say that the Golden Pass is not really that great. Unless you're relocating to the Montreux area, there is no reason to do it as a day trip.

Wengen in november is deserted. All bars and most restaurants are closed. I live there, and November is when I go down to Lauterbrunnen to the Horner pub to get a beer...

I would stay at Hotel Silberhorn in Lauterbrunnen in November.
