swiss adapter

It appears that Switzerland has its own adapter. Does the 2 prong European adapter work or do you need to buy the 3 prong "cloverleaf" that just works in Switzerland?

If you're staying in a hotel, just ask the front desk, they can provide one. The usual European adapter won't work.

The 2 prong Europlug adapter should work in Switzerland for non-grounded applications, although it is limited to 2.5 amp appliances. I have no idea what you mean by the "3 prong cloverleaf" adapter. This is the three prong grounding plug for use in Switzerland.

I quoted from the Rick Steves travel book on Switzerland. Under the section for electrical plugs in Switzerland, the author refers to the wall sockets as having "a three- plug cloverleaf pattern"

Rick is talking about the wall sockets, not the plugs.

Here's a picture of what he's talking about. It fits three plugs, either two prong (the same used in the rest of continental Europe) or three prong (unique type to Switzerland): http://www.englishforum.ch/attachments/housing-general/90189d1415004843-cost-fitting-plug-socket-light-switch-outlet-001.jpg

Some outlets in Switzerland are recessed, like this: http://www.internationalconfig.com/prod_shot/76101-S.jpg

For your two pronged plugs to fit in a Swiss recessed outlet, they need to be narrow plugs with the "cut edges" like this https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Euro-Flachstecker_2.jpg.

They will not take larger ones like this: http://www.alpha-crucis.com/3747-6437-thickbox/euro-plug-power-adapter.jpg

They also sell them here. If it's a small town, the Poste usually has them. You can also find them at the department stores and larger supermarkets. Some hotels do have them, but if someone has borrowed it ahead of you, you may have to wait.

Nice pics, Harold!

Funny, my step-down has the Swiss-shaped one (angled sides, sort of diamond) by default ;)

Denner has them as well as the electronic stores and sometimes Migros or Coop. There is a good electronics store in the Luzern train/bus station.
