We're planning our trip to Switzerland in August, and thinking of doing a day trip to St. Gallen on a Sunday. Are the restaurants and cable cars closed on Sundays in the summer?

Restaurant and lifts should be open. If you're looking for a nice not-to-strenuous walk high in the mountains, go to Flumserberg and take the lift to the top. You'll find a few kilometers of mostly level, wide and smooth hiking trails. Plus a few mountain restaurants that serve the typical Alpine fare.
