Suggestions wanted

I’m currently planning an October trip to Milan and Lake Como, but we decided to add an extra 4 days to our trip and fly home out of Zurich. I’ve been reading the RS guide book, but it’s all a bit overwhelming….SO many beautiful places to see.

Question: if you only had 4 days in Switzerland, what city area would you focus on?

My likes: beautiful scenery/hiking/food or chocolate tours/boats/architecture

Where on Lake Como are you planning? That will probably govern the itinerary for the next 4 days.

From Bellagio, I'd say you have 2 choices.

  1. Ferry to Menaggio, then bus to Lugano, and stay 1 night. Then train to Luzern via Bellinzona with the Treno Gottardo for a scenic ride over the Alps. Stay 2 or 3 nights in Luzern with several things to do including boat rides on the lake and mountaintop excursions to Rigi or Pilatus. If your flight home is after noon, you can stay 3 nights and get a direct train to Zurich airport as it is only about 1 1/4 hour train ride.

  2. Ferry to Varenna, then train to Tirano, then a direct regional scenic train over the Bernina Pass to Pontresina. Stay 2 nights for hiking if weather holds. Then train to Zurich via Chur for another scenic train ride on the Albula railway. One night in Zurich before flying home.
