Suggestions for two-day visit to Basel Switzerland

It's our first visit to Europe. Our Viking Rhine Viking River Cruise will disembark in Basel, Switzerland on Nov. 4th and will fly from Basel (BSL) to Amsterdan at 6:00 am. So, we have about two full days in Basel. I am looking for suggestions on
(1) which hotel should we stay to see the major attractions in Basel?
(2) should we reserve two-nights or three-nights hotel stay because we need to leave to the airport around 3:00 am in the morning? Or can we stay in BSL airport on the 3rd night instead of waking up at 3:00 am in the hotel to leave for airport?
(3) alternatively, would it work or would it be better if we visit and stay in Bern instead of Basel?

Greatly appreciate your suggestions!

Basel has an excellent TI. I contacted them in advance and received extensive tourist information including maps and self guided tours. They also sold guided tours. If you are talking about 11/4/2024, you could go on the website to get the information.

We did that cruise but in the opposite direction. In Basel, we stayed closer to the cathedral. You could also stay closer to the Rathuis. Basel is very beautiful. One easy walk would be to cross the Rhine close to the art museum, then walk to the next bridge which would bring you to the Rathuis.

The airport is small. You would need to find out if it is open all night. We had 6am flights twice from Europe. One was Warsaw and we just went there at about 11pm or midnight. Another flight was Catania, their airport was not open all night so we had a hotel next to the airport. My preference and it depends, of course, on the airport, to get their later in the evening.

We finished a Rhine river cruise in Basel a few years ago and just stayed overnight before continuing to Vienna.

We stayed at the Hotel Krafft, in a room with a balcony overlooking the Rhine, the old town and the cathedral. It was on the other side of the river from the town itself and had sensational views.

I highly recommend the hotel, and it was an easy walk over the bridge, or a boat across the river, to get to the old town.

Jules & DebH,

Thank you for the suggestions. We booked a hotel next to the airport for two nights and will share our experience after completing the trip.
