Suggestions for Switzerland Itinerary

Hi I'm planning a trip to finally see Switzerland and would love to hear some recommendations on the best way to see the picturesque parts of Bernese Oberland area. I'm currently planning on buying the Swiss Rail Pass for 3 or 4 days. I want to see the green valleys and picturesque scenes primarily, I'd like to see the mountain tops and would love to see Matterhorn but I understand that is very far away (and doesn't appear there's much to do there if you're not skiing)

Friday Aug 12
I'm planning on flying Swiss air from Chicago to Zurich, arriving mid-day and taking a train (appears there's a train station in the airport?) directly to Lucerne (IR75 was the recommended train) and takes about 50min to 1hr15m. Planning on exploring the city, checking out Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument. Open to any suggestions this day, main aim is to recover from traveling and prepare for the next day. Not sure if Mt Pilatus is doable this day.

Sat Aug 13
Train Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen (Luzern->Interlaken OST 1hr49m/9 stops/Platform 13, Interlaken OST to Lauterbrunnen 20m 3 stops, Platform 2A 2hr27m total)
Plan to drop bags at either hotel or Train lockers and then go on to check out Lauterbrunnen village, go to Murren + the flower Trail hike, Allmendhubel (heard this is a lookout point or scenic/still researching), Schilthorn (Piz Gloria), Birg (skyline walk/thrill walk), and then Gimmelwald.

Sun Aug 14
Go to Jungfraujoch, aim for lunch, return to Lauterbrunnen in the afternoon
Visit Staubbach falls

Mon Aug 15
Take the train to Lake Como, spend the afternoon in Como, lake boat, open to suggestions.

Tue Aug 16
Exit Switzerland, heading to Cinque Terre

Edit:
Thank you everyone for your advice and tips! This is a very helpful community!

Since you would only have a half-day in Luzern (and a jet-lagged day at that), I would just skip Luzern and head directly to the Lauterbrunnen area. Then you would have all day Sat & Sun to explore the valley and the villages and peaks above it.

The Half-Fare Card is probably a better value for this itinerary than the Swiss Travel pass.

Lauterbrunnen to Como is 7+ hours according to rome2rio. I’ll be going from Murren to Stresa in the fall which is still over 4 hours but it’s close to MXP where I leave from. Stresa is about the same distance to CT as Como.

Yes skip Lucerne this trip you will be rushed and it is too touristy for a jet lagged first day.

Lauterbrunnen to Como is 7+ hours according to rome2rio.

Using the timetable of the actual operator of the services, the SBB, Lauterbrunnen to Como S. Giovanni is 5 hours and 3 minutes, changing at Interlaken Ost, Luzern and Lugano.

I would still argue that going to Stresa and visiting the Borromean islands on Lake Maggiore would be more efficient and just as scenic as heading towards lake Como.
Likewise, I agree that Luzern is perhaps best skipped this time!

I would skip Cinque Terra, but you didn't ask for help on that part of your journey; and stay longer in Lake Como.

You have done a lot of research, but your Swiss trip seems too rushed, and you're not accounting for temperamental weather in the Alps, so I would add more days there. Going to the Jungfraujoch is rather time-consuming, RT. Also, a half day in Como seems much too short, and Como is in Italy. You will exit Switzerland before you get to Como.

Safe travels!

The Saturday looks way too packed since you have 2.5 hours of travel time first. If you're only interested in the Chapel Bridge and lion in Lucerne, it seems like you could just stop over there on your way to Lauterbrunnen instead of spending the night; this would set you up to be in Lauterbrunnen already on Saturday which would make your plans that day a little more workable. It is a lot to do still and you'll need the weather on your side, but I understand the appeal of cramming in everything you can in a few short days!

The connections to Como from Lauterbrunnen aren't great; are you set on Como specifically or do you just want some time by a scenic lake?

Side note: I'll be in the same area around the same time, so we just might run into each other! The Half Fare card is a better fit for my itinerary and you may find the same for yours as commented above, especially with how it gives half off at Jungfraujoch instead of the 25% off from the Swiss Travel Pass. I'd recommend running the numbers before committing to anything.

Agree with other posters that you should decide on one base only for this short trip to Switzerland. You only have two full days.

It seems that the Berner-Oberland is calling to you, so in that case head there directly and skip Lucerne. Lucerne is wonderful but one partial day there is not worth the hassle of changing lodgings etc.

In the B-O, stay in Wengen, Murren or Grindelwald instead of Lauterbrunnen if budget allows. Lautrebrunnen is in a deep valley with no views. Also, my advice would be to skip Jungfraujoch - lots of time on a train to get to a high station but much better to spend your time enjoying the views outside of a train.

The hike from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is REALLY wonderful and easy. You will see the beautiful green valley around Grindelwald and you'll see the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks on your entire walk.

Schilthorn also has great views and is kitschy and fun. Almendhubel is below Schilthorn above Murren. Best playground view in the world I'll wager. The flower walk is fine (we liked it with kids but if I were an adult traveling alone I might skip) but since you have limited time you should decide if that is where you want to spend your precious hours. It is nice to hike down to Murren from Almendhubel but if you are pressed for time you will have seen the views from the Schilthorn higher up so you could spend your time elsewhere.

Also look at First summit in Grindelwald - ziplines, mountain carts (go-karts basically - super fun!).

Staubbach falls is impressive as a traditional waterfall but do not miss Trummelbach falls which winds through a cave-like fissure in the mountain. https://www.truemmelbachfaelle.ch/e/

This is just me, but with such limited time I would skip the Bernese Overland and just stick to the Luzern area. I know another poster said to do the opposite, and that is fine too, but Luzern is easy to get to Zurich from and if you do want to go to Como you can get there directly from Luzern too.

Luzern is a nice city to look at in its own right, and has an old city wall to walk along. You can take a boat trip along the lake, go up Pilatus, Rigi or Engelberg, the latter giving you snow-capped glacier all year.

As an alternative to Como, you could stay in Switzerland and go to Lugano. It's on the same train line as Como anyway, just saves a bit of hassle when you have so little time and it is well worth looking at anyway.

Cinque Terra is one of my favorite places in Italy, but I'm 69yo and retired. Not a lot to do there, but great restaurants, seafood, and miles of beautiful hiking between the five cities. If beauty and relaxing aren't your thing, don't go to Cinque Terra. Also, if you're young and want night life, don't go to Cinque Terra. If you do go, be sure and go to the "Lemon Trail" an old Roman stone walkway with an adjacent creek, lemon trees and vineyards all around.

That Saturday schedule, Aug 13, looks to me like you won't have a chance to sit as you will be in constant motion. It takes a lot of time getting from one of these places to the next.
