Planning to stay 4 nights in the Berner Oberland in July 2017. Which town(s) would be the best for lodging, nightlife, etc.?
Thanks for any suggestions!
Kevin,
All the towns have good choices for accommodations of various types and price ranges, whether you decide to stay in Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, Wengen, Grindelwald or Interlaken. What kind of "night life" are you referring to? In the smaller towns, "night life" might be having a few cold ones in the local watering hole, going out for a pleasant after dinner walk or whatever. As Interlaken is the largest, you'll probably have better luck finding night clubs there.
My favorite villages are Lauterbrunnen and Murren. However nightlife there is described as a night cap at a bar with a stroll thru the village.
Interlaken will have casinos etc, but no charm or natural beauty.
Nightlife - that's a tricky one and I think it depends on your age. I'm guessing you're looking for fun people to hang out with. Maybe you should try the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald. But I don't think people typically visit the alpine villages for exciting/raucous nightlife.
Most of the towns of the Berner Oberland, except Gimmelwald, have quite a bit of nightlife... the Aprés Ski variety during the winter sports season. As others noted, the most nightlife you'll find in the summer is probably in Interlaken... which I think is a perfectly reasonable option for lodging, depending on your priorities. Of the towns a little closer to the mountain action, perhaps Grindelwald has a little more going on in the evenings, simply because it's bigger than the other towns. Grindelwald has at least one dance club, but I have no idea if it's even open in the summer.
We liked staying in Lauterbrunnen. Although there only 2 nights, and only able to take one hike, it seemed like it was easy to get to hikes/sites on either side of the valley. I have no idea about nightlife as that is not the reason we visited the area.
There are bars and nightclubs inGrindelwald. Seems like theones in hotels like the Spinne would be open in summer--the town is packed with tourists then.
Not BO but concerning nightlife outside of the cities...
We were staying in the Goeschenertal sevvveral years ago. Our hostess said that if the 'club' out back got too loud to let her know. Her son, not a little kid, was running a disco, she said, in his plastic-wrapped tree house. About 25-30' off the ground. In a tree. I thought it was a joke until the music started after dark :)
There is sometimes nightlife. In the strangest places.
Bon voyage!
Yeh, there's a disco in Wengen open very late on the weekends, at least during ski season.
