Anyone have suggestions for places to stay in Montreux or nearby? We are traveling by train in mid-May, coming from Lauterbrunnen. Planning to visit Gruyeres and not sure what else and looking for a suggestion for 2 nights. Travelling from there on to Chamonix or Annecy.
Montreux is a little congested...I would stay in neighboring Vevey, just to the west. It's much prettier, close to the lake, and not as squashed up against the freeway as Montreux. Vevey has many pretty places to stay along the lakefront promenade or in the old town that is also right on Lake Geneva. From there it's easy to head north to Gruyeres. To get down to Chamonix you just head east on the motorway to Martigny and follow the signs over the mountains, south to Chamonix. It's a surprisingly quick drive. I haven't driven from the Lake Geneva area to Annency so can't comment on that part! While you're in the Lake Geneva area you could also visit Chateau Chillon in Montreux, Laussanne and it's very beautiful cathedral, and through the gorgeous Lavaux Vineyards (Unesco World Heritage designation) that wrap around the north side of the lake and up through Valais. It's a lovely area!
We stayed at Hotel Masson in Montreux and loved it. Had a pretty room with a Wisteria covered balcony and the bed and bath had luxurious linens. A nice breakfast is included. Chillon is within walking distance.
Close to train station and right along Lake Geneva - Eurotel, it's a Best Western (not the same as in the U.S.), reservations are so easy as you can use the BW US #, rooms give a great view of the Lake as well as the Alps. Breakfast is included and served along the lake with great views. Stayed there twice. Not cheap but then nothing in CH or Montreux is. The drive to Chamonix is brreathtaking in beauty and Chamonix is cheaper and just great little place. Have also stayed in Vevey but prefer Montreux anytime.
